Enigmatic Portraits Jan 23, 2016 Like a caricaturist at Venice Beach, Elgar gives us short portraits of his extended group of friends in this varied and charming series of variations—representing the best qualities of each person. Pianist Andrew Tyson blew us all away two years ago with Rachmaninoff’s Second concerto, and returns this year with the same composer’s earlier effort.

Beethoven 7 David Locking conducts the beauty, powerful rhythmic energy and breathless joy of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. Its first performance was met with “applause that rose the point of ecstasy,” according to a contemporary newspaper account. Dylana Jenson, the first American woman to win the Silver Medal in the Tchaikovsky Competition, brings her talisman, the Shostakovich Violin Concerto, to perform with her husband, the Pasadena Symphony’s very own Music Director, David Lockington.
